The Civil War greatly stimulated speculative securities trading in New York. By 1869, membership had to be capped and has been sporadically increased since. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw rapid growth in securities trading.
During his researches, Mendeleev discovered a dependency between the atomic number of an element and it's physical and chemical properties. Fortunes were made and lost in a single day, and the president's own brother-in-law, Abel Corbin, was ruined.
