Throughout the course of history, women played an undeniable role in formulating our present, they have contributed in each and every matter mankind has known, and in each and every era mankind has ever ruled. They have proven to be as important and as valuable as men in medicine, policy, art & sports.
In this post, we will dive into great women’s stories whom without history, and the present wouldn’t have been the same. The stories of these great women and more are listed in our great women collection.
Soujourner Truth
Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist born in the 18th-century that later became a women’s rights activist, even after being born into slavery, she was able to become the first black woman to win a case against a white man, as she went to the court to recover her son after running with her daughter from slavery. Sojourner once said “You may hiss as much as you please, but women will get their rights anyway. You can’t stop us, neither”. Truth didn’t just contribute to women’s rights only, but her actions definitely added up with the effort of others in fighting slavery and racism, and without her, who knows what would happen to these three noble causes.
Mother Tresa
Mother Tresa was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She is honored in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta due to her beautiful actions. After arriving in India in 1929 she dedicated her life to religion and helping others. She began her missionary work with the poor in 1948. “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone”. She even went into a warzone to rescue 37 innocent children. All of these actions contributed to our humanity and peace all over the world.
Angela Merkel
Angela Merkel is a German politician acting as Chancellor of Germany since 2005. Merkel has been known as the leader of the European Union. She became the first female leader of a German party. She is making a great effect on the European Union while serving the longest period as incumbent head of government in the European Union.
Marie Curie
Marie Skłodowska Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist, she conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. Her great efforts got her to be the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, and the first person to win it twice, since then no other woman won the prize twice, and she made an unprecedented achievement by winning the prize in two different fields. She made a lot of discoveries such as the radioactivity of the Thorium element and she even discovered Polonium and Radium with her husband Piere Curie. Her discoveries contributed to both physics and chemistry.
Princess Diana
Princess Diana was a member of the British royal family, and the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. She gave birth to both Prince William and Prince Harry. She was divorced in 1996 and died a car crash in 1997. Diana added a lot to humanity with her charity work. She was always the focus of the conversation for her attitude. Even after her controversial death, she was still in the memory of lots of people for so many years.
Theresa May
Theresa May is a British politician who served as prime minister from 2016 to 2019, she was the first female chairman of the Conservative Party. She became the second woman to become British Prime Minister. She contributed a lot to the British Police department and played a great role in the British Brexit.
Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, a British politician known as the Iron Lady, she served as the first female British Prime Minister. She became the first Prime Minister to visit China. During her era, the British economy flourished. She ruled with an iron fist as shown in her response to the Irish prisoners’ hunger strikes “Crime is crime is crime; it is not political”. She even survived an assassination attempt in 1984 by the IRA.
Anna May Wong
Anna May Wong is an American actress, she is the first Chinese American movie star in Hollywood. She played her first leading role at a very young age of 17. After leaving Hollywood for Europe, she still managed to build her audience from Operetta and Schmutziges Geld. She returned to Hollywood again after success in Europe.
Anna stood up for the Chinese American cause as they were looked to as villains and protested saying “Why is it that the screen Chinese is always the villain? And so crude a villain – murderous, treacherous, a snake in the grass! We are not like that. How could we be, with a civilization that is so many times older than the West?”. She was named “The World’s most beautiful Chinese girl” in 1938. Wong had her Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. She left a great influence in Hollywood and is a great role model for lots of Chinese girls out there.
Indira Gandhi
Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi is an Indian politician who served as the Prime Minister of India twice and was the first and only female to do that. She won the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971. Indira was assassinated in 1984. She was a great politician and leader and led India to flourish in her two periods as prime minister which was the second longest-serving period after her father.
